Make Your Own Kit
We are a semi-open ARPG species focused on community based world building and discovering your creativity! We encourage you to draw, write and create things about your Folk Kit(s) as they grow up and unlock the secrets of the big wide and unknown world before them! Join the adventurer's guild and travel beyond the home colony of Grimsby Grove to find the secrets of this world, or have your Folk hang around with their friends after a long day of work or school, it's all up to you!
This page will discuss how to make your first set of Folk kits!
What Is A Kit?
A Kit is the name of Folk that are not adults, which covers from late teens to even newborn stages! All Kits have three things in common that tell them apart from the adults:
|
Vocabulary: a Folk HeartPhylakardia (singular, “Fie-la-kar-dee-ah”) Phylakardies (plural, “Fie-la-kar-dee-eys”) This is a solid opaque crystal that sits in the chest of every Folk kit, and eventually the chest cavity of every Folk. Don't forget it when making your MYO! |
The type of Folk which you will be making is our most common subspecies, Witch Folk! Witch Folk are the only subspecies which is able to use Wild Magic! They have diamond shaped phylakardies as Kits, and they disappear as they grow up, being absorbed into their bodies as a replacement for a functioning heart. Folk as a species are also very modern in some aspects, which means they can wear any type of clothing they desire. There are no planned clothing upgrades. Folk are able to wear anything that they please, as long as it's meant for that environment!

Kit Anatomy and Drawing
These little kits may not look like much, but they can all be very unique all the same! All Folk kits have the following features:
|
Now, let’s go to the best part! How to draw them. The following is how one person (wytchbones on Deviantart) draws them. If you have a different way of drawing them, that’s perfectly okay! We encourage using your own art style and having fun with them, as long as they’re recognizable and have the important basics aspects it’ll be all good! We do recommend reading through this for important anatomy info and what is needed on an approval, even if you’re confident you already understand how to draw them in your style.
We will be drawing a Folk kit for make-your-own (or MYO for short) approval! This will go over the steps on what is needed for an approval.
Step 1 - Stances
First thing’s first, you’ll need to choose how you want your Kit to stand on their application.
Folk themselves, including kits, come in varied builds and heights though they do not get taller than 4ft standing upright and 2ft when on all fours. All Folk are capable of switching between standing on two legs or all four. Most kits are seen on all fours, however it is not uncommon for kits to use to walk in a more biped fashion - especially if they wish to carry something that is too heavy for their tails. |
Step 2 - Phylakardia
Those who can possess and use magic have a special organ called a Phylakardia, or a “magic heart”. The Phylakardia is a bright pastel colored organ which can be difficult to break. The main purpose of a Phylakardia is to filter, absorb and use the magic of the New World. It also keeps the creature which it has been birthed or created with alive as long as it is not broken.
The Phylakardia is only exposed on Folk kits, as the Phylakardia does not grow with them - it's created before they are fully developed, and gradually sinks into the chest cavity as they age. (Check our Breeding and Life Cycle for more info on Kit development!)

Step 3 - Colors and Placements
Your kit is coming along great - now, it’s time to color! Be sure to also either draw your own Front and Back views or use the provided one in the #Art-Resources channel to color as well so that the mod approving your kit can clearly see all angles of your kit!
Let’s grab your kit’s base first! The colors you see above are the colors which all MYO kits can have. Each palette has six colors on it (listed vertically) and you can choose any of those six colors to use as your kit’s base color! For our example, we’re going to grab the Purple Palette. Your base color can go anywhere that we’ve colored on the kit shown and should take up most of your kit’s body. |
Next, from the same palette, you may choose up to two additional colors to use as secondary colors on your MYO kit.
You may pick your own placements, the rules of placements are that they must be simple, rounded and smooth with no sharp points, should not imitate markings, and your base color should still be clearly the color taking up most of the kit’s body. Important: Please note when coloring the tail, each section MUST be one solid color. Want to know more information and examples of acceptable placements? Click the button above to read our placement guide! |
Next up are the smaller, more limited color options.
These are more specific and have more strict moderation during the approval process.

Nose Your kit’s nose may be only pure black, or a natural shade of pink. This is not an additional color on your kit and may not be moved around with color upgrades. (There are nose upgrades to change this later.) Tongue Must be a natural pink color, should match the nose if the nose is also a natural pink color. This is not an additional color on your kit and may not be moved around with color upgrades. There are tongue upgrades to change this later. |
Eye Iris and Phylakardia Kit’s are born with eyes lacking in pigment. All MYO kits may only have one of the following three eye colors above unless they are from a special event (if this exception is in effect, it will be clearly outlined in the event.) A kit’s phylakardia color must match their eye color. This is not an additional color on your kit and may not be moved around with color upgrades. A Kit’s eyes develop pigment upon growing up, and you will be able to choose any color you like at that time! Their phylakardia will not change, but instead will be absorbed into their body. Kit Sclera Must be solid white. This is not an additional color on your kit and may not be moved around with color upgrades. |
Accent Color
Your kit’s accent color can be any color you choose EXCEPT for pure black or pure white. As a good rule of thumb, we should still be able to see lineart and there should be a visible difference when on a solid white background. Your kit’s accent color may only be applied to specific areas of your kit.
Accent color can be placed on:
Ear Insides
Eyebrows
Tails
Paws/Toes

Here are other examples of acceptable kit designs! As long as the accent color is visible within one of these areas, it's considered an accent color.
Below you’ll see some more examples of what is and isn’t okay for an MYO kit. Remember that these are meant to be starting points, which means the "bad" myo example can be done later by growing up your kit and getting Acorns for upgrades!
This is a great example of what a Folk kit should look like!

And here’s our kit Frenzy now with all those colors, and some eyelashes and eye highlights thrown in for style.
Application and Approval
Right here is the application for Grimsby Grove! Maybe you're ready to get your application approved! How exciting! Fivel here is to help you understand how to get your Folk kit approved! When doing your apps, keep the following in mind:
|
Once you have that all done, upload your Kit to Deviantart with the following in their description!
-Name: This name should be the same name listed in your application!
-Gender: This is the gender of your Kit, not the biosex of the Kit! All Folk have the same sex.
-Creation: This is how your Kit was made! You can get MYO slots from things like raffles and events - you list if it's a Normal MYO or Event MYO here. If you are using a non-standard color palette, please list that as well.
-Subspecies: This is the subspecies of your Kit! Will almost always be a Witch.
-ID #: This is your Kit's ID! This will be provided for you upon approval, and make sure you keep it safe as it's used for all group mechanics!
Event Upgrade: For events where you include the upgrade on the kit.
Finally, below this, link your Acorn Counter and list your Acorn Count!
Once you've got your application uploaded make sure to head over to our Discord server to get them approved in the #myo-approvals channel. Make sure to follow the pinned form in that channel!
